can I just point out in light of recent news that no being of any species has sex gametes at conception
imagining a 4 cell fetus with fully formed testes is hilarious. by this def no one on earth is male or female, ironically. but obv, if any of this was based on science it wouldn't be an issue

This is Maisy. She gets an additional party hat for each birthday, and she just turned nine. 13/10 may this tradition go on forever

they ordered me a custom stamp at work with my teller # for checks and it's the kind that's self inking and you press it down and it makes a satisfying cl-chunk sound and the temptation to do it first directly on my forehead is very strong

For some reason people love to inform me that you had to sit for 10+ minutes to get photos in the 1800s. That was really only true in the 1840s and earlier - exposure times got exponentially shorter after that. This is "Kitty playing 'Hide and Seek'", 1871. www.getty.edu/art/collecti...

“Reckless deforestation provides our most potent mythic image of how, to enrich ourselves in the present, we steal from the past and impoverish the future”.

Brilliant @robertmoor.bsky.social essay on the (ethically) deep tree-time kept by old-growth forest.

A good piece on the complicated story of the ecology of abandonment.

"Patches of forest thrust outward, vines demolished villas, chemical-smelling invasive thickets occupied meadows..."
The great abandonment: what happens to the natural world when people disappear?
