One thing I love about working with sourdough is when I finish making anything (like tonight’s pizza dough) I have to think about what I’m going to make next. Am I going to bake bread tomorrow? Better feed my starter to make sure I have enough tomorrow, plus a bit more so I can plan for the next day

I was in the driveway finishing installation of a replacement tail light assembly on our van when I heard the kitchen timer telling me my load of sourdough bread was ready to come out of the oven.

Our wonderful dog Jake (gone since 2019, gosh) absolutely hated having a camera pointed at him. When we whipped out a phone, he’d often give us this profile with one lil canine tooth as a little fuck off.

And with that, I hang up my Guardian carrier bag for the last time. 8 years as a paperboy—the first five with my son. The rest solo, now that he’s at university. A hell of a great way to start my day for most of a decade.

I was miffed at my daughter for going to a friend’s house with the shed keys in her pocket, until I remembered I spent the early pandemic making sourdough bread and teaching myself to pick locks.

At my daughter’s choir concert this weekend, they did a bunch of songs from the Sound of Music. The singer who was to be the baby goat in the Lonely Goatherd got sick, and, well, they found a pinch hitter. Sound up.
