I've been running my FreeBSD instance with ZFS off of a thumb drive for the past three years.

It's been working great, until now. The writes are finally slowing down the drive and I'm going to have to replace it with something proper.

Is it just me or does FreeBSD EOL their releases every quarter? At least it feels that way

They just made too many wild claims in too short of a time period. Not surprised to see this at all.
A physicist has published an analysis that pokes holes in the protocol that underpins Microsoft’s claim to have created the first topological qubits. The critique comes amid mounting speculation about the validity of Microsoft’s claim.

This is so cool. But would be double plus cool with the colors inverted.

I'm going to go ahead and day it. If you're into retro computers, then this is one of the most underrated accounts on here.

I guess this is another registrar to add to the list of registrar's to avoid
itch.io itch.io @itch.io · Dec 9
I kid you not, @itch.io has been taken down by Funko of "Funko Pop" because they use some trash "AI Powered" Brand Protection Software called Brand Shield that created some bogus Phishing report to our registrar, iwantmyname, who ignored our response and just disabled the domain

I think the big problem in music today is algorithmic music discovery. I also think we've been seeing a growing micro-trend of human music curation with people like Derrick Gee.
I hate takes like this because the problem isn't that there's too much music, but that the infrastructure of music criticism that existed even ten years ago has essentially evaporated
is there just too much fucking music???

This is so cool. There used to be a WinAmp skinned Spotify client as well, that allowed you to use all of the old skins. But then Spotify nerfed their API and it died along with tons of other projects.

Been working on a music player that plays different music based on what emotions you are displaying (it uses your webcam to do sentiment analysis).

It's still a work in progress, but I figured I might as well share the URL since I haven't had time to work on it lately.

Finally making progress on Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance.

It’s more than a book about bikes—it’s a profound exploration of quality, systems thinking, and the philosophical underpinning of craftsmanship. Essential reading for devs who care about the how as much as the what in their work.

Anova just announced that they won't be bricking their old sous vide cookers, after announcing that they will do so earlier in the year.

That's great, but now I have two of these things and don't know what to do with one of them.

Just horrible PR handling...

You want to understand how #atproto (the protocol behind Bluesky) works?

Read this threads! 👇🏼
ok, let's break it down.

at the core of atproto is the data. it lives own your own computer (or someone hosts it for you). think of it as a hard drive with JSON files on it

data is structured (i.e. has a type), and can references other records on other peoples' computer with a URI like a hyperlink
November 20, 2024 at 8:04 PM
is there maybe a list somewhere of all the cool #atproto stuff people are working on?
