I’ve driven between Alice & the border many times. Most people don’t realize there are ICE checkpoints on ALL highways approx. 100 miles out. They stop EVERY vehicle, ask about citizenship, eyeball you/your car. I don’t know what the policy was for school buses before, but checkpoints are not new.

And I guess that’s where we are. Waiting. Watching. Hoping people will wake the fuck up before it’s too late and we are too far gone. Reading another Substack informing us, yes, but also repeating the theme to the same sliver of us who were already paying attention. To what end? I wish I knew.

Because we’ve swallowed the “rugged American individualism” trope, I fear we will never coalesce, too busy pulling ourselves up by our bootstraps to come together, to sacrifice a few sacred cows for the good of the country, the collective. We are disparate and disconnected and despairing.

But I hate how fractured this information is, how it feels like we are grasping around in the void. I think about Thomas Paine and Alexander Hamilton’s pamphlets, stoking revolution. We have a million pamphleteers now, constant demands on our attention, and no social compact.
