It has led here, to this moment, where all three branches of the GOP-controlled government have been willing to torch the republic and democracy that generations of elected officials and citizens have tended for 249 years simply to please Donald Trump and avoid running afoul of his temper. Where America goes from here is a story yet to be written. It will surely get worse — Trump’s push now is clearly focused on locking in an illegitimate claim to power. Whether we can come back from this moment is a story yet unknown. But it’s clear today America is different and, even if we fight our way back, it will never be the same again.

Brilliant summation of what makes a great & sometimes timeless movie, and also the reason why the best songs are surgically insightful emotionally but deliberately vague on the details.
A true artist never reveals the exact inspiration for their work, unless they're sick if it. Plenty of examples!
The reason is this: the movie is incredibly, richly *suggestive*. It gestures at all kinds of things that it does not show or explain to you. In fact, virtually every line is like this. What are power converters? What is the Kessel Run? What was Han Solo's history with Jabba? Time after time, the movie briefly gestures as what is an entire vast portion of the universe. And because it does not further show or explain it, *your imagination is left to fill it in*. All the little hints, the places & characters referenced: you fill those in.

The same can probably not be said for the Commonwealth; The UK has been next to worthless in this crisis already, and we can only assume they would support the Americans, or at most turn a blind eye. To be sure, the Royals would have something useless to say, perhaps some condemnations from the UK Government too, but overall, nothing can be expected from them.

These are despicable people, lacking even the morality of the hoodlum – and now they run the country we have regarded as our closest friend since the Edwardian age. Given all that, of course British politics should be contemplating a radical new direction, whether that means an economy rewired for rearmament or a rapprochement with the European Union, given that the world of the Brexit vote of 2016 has vanished and to stand apart from our nearest neighbours is now not only stupid but dangerous. When the planet’s most powerful country has become a mafia state, you do whatever it takes.

The parts of the government that work to implement laws have been maligned for decades. Americans have been told that the people who provide them with services are conspirators within a “deep state.” We have been instructed that the billionaires are the heroes. All of this work was preparatory to the coup that is going on now. The federal government has immense capacity and control over trillions of dollars. That power was a cocreation of the American people. It belongs to them. The oligarchs around Trump are working now to take it for themselves. Theirs is a logic of destruction. It is very hard to create a large, legitimate, functioning government. The oligarchs have no plan to govern. They will take what they can, and disable the rest. The destruction is the point. They don’t want to control the existing order. They want disorder in which their relative power will grow.
