I just want to wish everyone out there a happy pride month! One of my friends said "It's pride month all year at mine" and I agree but it also feels important to have this time to learn about the history and issues faced by the LGBTQ+ community, and to send a message of solidarity. #pridemonth

Today is my last day at Google. I joined as an intern almost 18 years ago, and it still feels like it was yesterday. I'm incredibly grateful that I got to work with so many amazing and talented folks, but I'm also excited to try something new. First step: a few months of travel and photography :)

Planning to write a blog post about my process for cleaning/restoring old controllers and consoles. My results are generally very good, but my methods are likely to be controversial.

On a side note, I fixed my website and it's back online at davewarnock.com.
This picture shows an open dishwasher with two shelves and a cutlery basket. The dishwasher is loaded with the various plastic parts of a Sony Playstation 2, 2 original "Duke" XBox Controllers, an original XBox S Controller, and an XBox 360 Controller. The cutlery basket is filled with various small parts like buttons. The picture also shows that the Playstation 2 has been fully disassembled as things like the CD tray are shown. The parts are dirty, making this a "before" picture.

Interesting blog post about how classic arcade games were rescued from a rotting ship. If not for the hard work of people like this then Video Games are going to be like silent movies, with tons of lost media.

Progress! The Xbox controllers all feel pretty good if I'm being honest, even the Duke controller. Need to clean up the XBox S controller which I picked up the other day.
4 different game controllers are shown for the Xbox series of consoles. At the top is the original Duke Xbox controller which is quite large. It has a D pad, two joysticks, 8 buttons and R and L triggers. Next is the Xbox S controller which is more compact and moves some of the buttons around. The third is the Xbox 360 controller, which is more compact again, adds Left and Right shoulder buttons and removes two front buttons. It also introduces the central X button to access the OS. Finally the latest Xbox controller which has a more blocky style with smoother surfaces, but overall is similar to the 360 controller. Together they represent about 20 years of evolution of the Xbox gaming controllers.

Finished fixing the crystal Xbox! This one clearly belonged to a smoker and was full of tar and tar-covered dust. Someone had already done a superficial cleaning and removed the clock cap (thankfully). Very pleased!

Just finished deep cleaning these original Xbox controllers. Looking pretty good!

Got that TV working! Bit of a process and I eyeballed the calibration instead of doing it properly but it's now stable. Very pleased.

🧵 In 2020, I nearly died from mysterious industrial chemical exposure at my apartment. Later, I discovered my employer was dumping toxic waste into our windows from their Skunkworks semiconductor fab next-door. I tipped off US EPA, who then raided them in 2023. EPA sent me the report on Friday. 💀 ⬇️
