Global sales of electric cars continue to break records 🚘

In 2024, 1 in 5 cars sold worldwide was electric. In 2025, it's set to be more than 1 in 4.

Total electric car sales are on track to exceed 20 million this year despite economic uncertainties → iea.li/4mfHty3

Great write-up from the FT on the role of flexibility in the UK energy system.

Proposed angle for a follow-up explainer article: “How can technology help Britons save on bills and support the energy system - without asking them to change behaviour?”
The future of energy is not only about how we produce but also about how we use it.

As the UK moves toward net zero, smart tariffs and tech help us shift habits to match renewables.

Flexibility is key—for the grid and for us all.

Great piece in FT 👇

I cycled across London to an event this morning, and the many cycle superhighways were all delightfully full of cyclists whizzing (at various speeds, but all faster than the cars) past the car traffic. Londoners clearly want to cycle and it works... more cycle infrastructure, please!

Great to see a battery-focused policy from Labor in the run up for the Australian elections: 30% discount for residential batteries up to 50KWh, helps reduce energy bills and decarbonise the grid. www.abc.net.au/news/2025-04...
A battery for about $5k could cover most households' needs, experts say

Awesome! Now try adding a battery 🤩
NEW ANALYSIS: Current running costs of heat pumps on standard tariff reach cost parity with gas boilers with average efficiency (SCoP 2.9).

BUT: Highly efficient heat pumps + smart tariffs can more than halve heating costs.

The world is set to move rapidly into the Age of Electricity

In recent years, electricity rose 2x as fast as total energy demand

But from now to 2035, it's set to grow 6x as fast, driven by EVs, air conditioners, AI & more

The world is set to add a huge 5,500 GW of renewable capacity between now & 2030 — even outperforming governments' own national targets

This is equal to the current total power capacity of China, India, the US & the EU combined

Poland has long had the reputation of Europe's climate laggard.

Not anymore - Poland reduced the share of coal in its electricity mix from 95% in 2000 to 54% in 2024.

Wind+solar are up from 0% in 2000 to 23% in 2024.

“It's amazing how pollution has dropped in #Paris in 15 years. @annehidalgo.bsky.social has filled the city with bike-lanes & not only has she reduced pollution by 40% but she’s also been re-elected.”

Trading car space for green space, bike space, kid space…trading pollution for people. Good trade.
Es alucinante cómo ha bajado la contaminación en París en 15 años. Anne Hidalgo lo ha llenado todo de carriles bici y no sólo ha reducido la contaminación en un 40%, sino que ha sido reelegida.

100% agree with this. Only serious economic impact is able to make the business case for serious actions. The rest is just PR. Can’t say I like it, but that’s the rule of the democratic capitalism system we live and work.
The insurance industry will be the hero that finally spurs collective action that is significant enough to reverse the climate crisis.

We’re all the slowly boiling frog, until insurance says we can’t buy a home in much of the country. Only then will we treat this like the climate emergency it is :/
Today on Volts: the insurance industry is the canary in the climate change coal mine. Now prices are rising, insurers are pulling out of whole states, & state budgets are straining to make up the difference. I talk with @kategordon.bsky.social about the whole mess.

I say x10 more projects like this! If we are serious about climate and energy transition, we should start looking at reality through the lens of opportunities rather then pointing out issues. The perfect solution does NOT exist 🤷‍♂️
Sending solar power from Morocco may well be technically feasible, but I would like to see more analysis of what Morocco gets out of this. Only 20% of their electricity is currently renewable - surely local decarbonisation should be the priority. Is this energy colonialism?
