The Cracker Barrel logo bullshit is manufactured outrage but I DO think there's an interesting point to be made here about how marketing genuinely does create culture, for better or for (usually) worse.
Really I think the big takeaway here is that the only actual culture America has is various corporate logos and their associated brand identities. That old dude, who I didn't know even had a name until this week, is apparently a bunch of people's central father figure.

I'm seeing so much defeatism, infighting, and dogmatic purity tests among folks on the left lately. And it all seems so counter to coalition-building, which basically comes down to looking your neighbor in the eyes and, despite your differences and imperfections, saying "I'm with you"
yes of course these types of protests are cringe, they’re incredibly cringe, all successful propaganda is cringe. and that weepy sentimentality is one of the things that can eventually make people decide it’s worth taking risks against their own safety and security for something more important
