if not polystyrene or something that produces Bad Fumes when melted, drill a shallow hole into the surface. then fill/partially fill that hole with e.g. tamiya putty. wait a for it to be partially dry and then stick a toothpick in there to round out the bottom, then light sanding to smooth out

it depends on the material. if polystyrene, heat a safety pin or something with a lighter and press into the surface. Wiggle it around a bit to produce "crater marks" with the melted material
