Who is profiting from asylum hotels? New report finds private contractors have made “excessive” profits out of asylum accommodation at the taxpayers’ expense. Home Office being charged £145 per migrant per night in a hotel, compared to £23 in a rented house.

Sad to hear of the death of Dame Jilly Cooper. I had the pleasure of meeting her at the BAFTAs this year and we had a good giggle when I told her I used to get her books from the library growing up and the naughty bits would always have the pages folded over! R.I.P 🩷

A culture warrior before her time, Mary Whitehouse claimed to be an ordinary woman who represented the little people against the establishment - what are the parallels with the protests and politics of today? My interview with Maxine Peake and @carolinebirduk.bsky.social on c4news at 7pm:

A picturesque #parkrun in Porthcawl 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 Lovely route along the promenade. Learnt a fascinating bit of history, civil rights activist Paul Robeson performed for Welsh miners here in 1957 - via a transatlantic telephone, as the U.S. government had confiscated his passport ☎️ 🎤

Great to meet Aftam and Shetum in Tel Aviv and to hear their experiences as Ethiopian Jews living in Israel. Some in their community believe they’re the original Israelites, others that they are descendants of the Tribe of Dan or the son of King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba.

“I think the Israeli government has abandoned the hostages for a war that’s sole purpose is to keep Netanhayu as Prime Minister,” Idit tells me.
I met the dance teacher in the midst of the general strike, holding up this bus, with the traffic trying to get by around her.

Filming in Tel Aviv, there’s a general strike across Israel today calling for a deal to brings the hostages home and end the war. I’ve spoken to people from all

Had a wander round the city of Jaffa, it has some really charming streets and alleyways. It's one of the oldest port cities in the world, with a rich history, and was once part of the Ottoman Empire. And yes, it’s where Jaffa oranges are from! They were developed by Arab farmers in the 19th Century

“Do you accept people are starving and dying of malnutrition in Gaza?”
“Absolutely not…you've reported many of those latest funeral images. Does anyone look starving there? I saw very well fed people.”
My exchange with Sharon Haskell, Israel’s Deputy Foreign Minister:
August 15, 2025 at 9:59 AM
More than 100 humanitarian organisations have called on Israel to stop the "weaponisation of aid" into Gaza, as starvation deepens.
I’ve just asked Deputy Foreign Minister Sharren Haskel about these claims, she told me many reports of people starving are “propaganda.” More on #c4news at 7pm
