I would spend hours looking through all the 78s only to take 2 that I didn’t really want, but I’d feel I ought to take something after all that effort. Then I’d accidentally break one of them on the way home.

Seven Seas of Rhye by Queen, bought in a short-lived ex-chart bargain singles rack in Box paper shop somewhen in 1975. Soon after Bohemian Rhapsody came out & I was hugely disappointed, ‘this’ll NEVER be a hit’, I said to mum. Never bought another Queen record.

Bob Dylan’s ‘Forever Young’, believe it or not. It is frankly terrifying. He makes ‘May you stay forever young’ sound like an evil curse.

I was given it as part of a trio of EMI discs that were sent as review copies to a journalist relative in 1979. They’d obviously given up on new wave and were knuckling down to their core audience: the other two were by Pete Murray and Marlene Dietrich.

At the same time, I’m sure when you originally handed over your £800 they didn’t say, ‘oh, watch out though, in 12 years it’ll do a factory reset & you’ll lose everything’.
