Imaging Scientist @mrccmm MRC Centre for Medical Mycology at UoExeter. Applying and resourcing MYCOscopy to understand human fungal pathogens - always keen to chat
Me and the #MycBio25 cohort had a great time today. Got to see an OpenScope in the wild @uctidm-mu.bsky.social and play for a whole day on an @zeiss-microscopy.bsky.social LSM980 - been 3 years since I’ve used a point scanner confocal on fungi

I was 3 when we last won the Scottish Cup, the same as my boy! Hope he doesn’t have to wait another 35 yrs!

Great to have Lucian Duvenage from @mrccmm.bsky.social CapeTown ✈️ to do MYCOscopy w/ @balloulab.bsky.social in Emergomyces Africanus - an emerging fungal pathogen yeast that needs more Mycology bioimaging tools. Here are some Macropahges brimming with them (green yeast)

Cool/weird that ITV picked this up, usually home to some trashy stuff.

Huzzah! A 3D print of a CFW stained yeast. The 3D surface model was exported from IMARIS. Printed by our talented PhD student Jack Gregory.

Today we’re installing our latest system for throughout plate and slide imaging of histology and FL MYCOscopy. This will unlock a few more scaled up projects @mrccmm.bsky.social #MycologyBioimagingInitiative

🔬 Are you interested in fluorescence microscopy of fungal pathogens/pathogenesis?
Mycology Bioimaging Intiaitive @mrccmm.bsky.social is thrillied to announce it's first workshop in CapeTown for #African scientists (w/AfricaMicroscopyInitiative)

Please disseminate!

After all these years filling my screen until I can't see the tab anymore - I found the tab group function in Goole Chrome. Big find for 2025!

I'm looking to database organelle dyes which work in fungi. Please comment if you can contribute w/ details.

We regularly see @mrccmm.bsky.social that some don't work in some fungi, but I just don't think it's been tested properly #Mycoscopy

I started this w/ Alex Lichius years ago, tip of the 🧊!

Saw this in someone’s feed the other day - reccomend? I’ve been looking for a good bike ergonomics guide, this may have?

This is why we use confocal #microscopy to type mitochondria @mrccmm.bsky.social #MYCOscopy
Left image is a 4D projected confocal stack of mitochondria, that would represent a typical widefield image. Middle represents a single confocal Z slice in the hypha.

We have another @mrccmm.bsky.social image in the ‘Images of Research’ exhibition @exeter.ac.uk
These are DIC images of various forms that epithelial cell take - you gotta watch these dynamics, not just snapshot one time point

#MYCOscopy Tip: We rely on SUM projection images for our screening of fluorescent protein/dye content in fungal cells.
It's common to use MAX projection for illustration, but for quantitative mesaurments we use SUM.
Please contribute to this discussion if there are more insights!

Useful MYCOscopy approach to measuring hyphal growth (without having to segment the entire filament per frame) TrackMate used to Track the change in area over time.

This is a sweet 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 comedy. A topic we all struggle with: as our careers and responsibilities increase, so do the needs of our elderly loved ones, especially if you live far away.
A great topic to thread comedy and poignancy. Well done #onlychild #bbcScotland
