Director Yasujirō Ozu obviously cares deeply for his characters and tells their story in tender scenes made more moving by camera work that artfully catches their expressions.
Thanks @tajiisawol.bsky.social & @JacquiWine.bsky.social for recommending I follow Ozu’s superb FLOATING WEEDS w/ this.

First watch: LATE SPRING (Japanese, 1949) is a lovely film that finds a 27-year-old daughter wanting to stay with her father to care for him in their happy home.
Yet she is pushed unwillingly toward marriage due to societal expectations and an interfering aunt.

Recent watch: MOGAMBO (1953).
White moviemakers go from Hollywood to Africa to make a tedious film about white people involved in a shallow love triangle in Africa.
It has a few interesting moments—see on-location filming—but stock footage is jarring.
Definitely not John Ford’s best.

#tbt That time a bartender in Provincetown, Mass., had a tattoo of a 45rpm record adapter on his neck.
First and last time I ever asked anyone if I could take a picture of their neck. 😂

Rewatch: THE BAT (1959).
A steel-clawed, masked killer stalks a country mansion where a mystery author and companion are staying—and where $1 million in stolen loot may be hidden.
Not terribly scary, but it has atmosphere, wit—and Vincent Price and Agnes Moorehead.

First watch: In YOJIMBO (Japanese, 1961), director Akira Kurosawa masterfully blends samurai and western genres into one outstanding film.
Toshiro Mifune is brilliant as a wandering rōnin who, needing money, comes to town and plays two warring factions against each other.

First watch: NIGHTMARE (1964), a Hammer #horror film.
I’m forgiving of the somewhat muddled plot because:
✅ It’s Hammer!
✅ It has a creepy house with shadowy figures lurking in corridors
✅ The lighting and cinematography are wonderful
✅ Themes of insanity thicken the plot

Playing chef in the kitchen and rewatching an intense thriller, ACT OF VIOLENCE (1949).
Fred Zinnemann’s fine direction, a superb cast and remarkable cinematography highlight this story of a former WWII POW harboring dark wartime secrets.
Love this one!

Halloween rewatch: THE LITTLE GIRL WHO LIVES DOWN THE LANE (1976) for the first time in decades.
As I recall, Jodie Foster is effective as a strange girl who harbors secrets about her parents and visitors to her house.
It’s an intriguing blend of horror, thriller, mystery, suspense.

Every #Halloween I think of this street art of Bela Lugosi’s Dracula that Marvin and I saw while walking late night through a dark underpass while visiting Milwaukee.
The situation was a little creepy.

Sidenote: I sort of liked The Blair Witch Project when I saw it, but in retrospect the marketing campaign leading up to the film’s release was much more effective than the film itself.
(Not sure if it was a thing where you are.)

First watch: BLACK TUESDAY (1954).
Edward G. Robinson is at his evil best as a prison-break leader in this #NoirAlley feature that involves death row inmates on the run, hostage-taking, a mounting body count and a tense, murderous standoff.

We’re neighbors! I grew up outside of Harlan when it was a bustling little town. Wouldn’t trade those times for anything.
Wonderful memories of your grandmother!
Pictures are from the back porch of my late parents’ house.

Woke up way too early & realized I just missed an opportunity on TCM to record/rewatch STALKER, the Andrei Tarkovsky film I struggled with after loving ANDREI RUBLEV & SOLARIS.
My 1st viewing of STALKER was in three sittings due to interruptions (the problem, I suspect).

I once thought WILD AT HEART was my favorite David Lynch film after its release in 1990.
Not so after a rewatch.
I like it; I don’t love it.
Despite amazing performances by the entire cast, I found the storyline & references to THE WIZARD OF OZ a bit tedious.

First watch: RIDE THE HIGH COUNTRY (1962), an early Sam Peckinpah #western.
It explores honor, betrayal and redemption as ex-lawmen Joel McCrea and Randolph Scott transport gold from a decadent mining camp to a bank.
