I can’t promise this will be the last time I talk about inequity — or equity washing — in science. But after the multitude of responses to my Nature piece, I know something has shifted. Many came from the Global North. That alone feels like a small win. 👉 rdcu.be/eGEun
Equity in science is a beautiful lie — and I’m done pretending | Nature
Science isn’t really moving towards equity; institutions are just perfecting the appearance of equity. We need to build an alternative system. Science isn’t really moving towards equity; institutions are just perfecting the appearance of equity. We need to build an alternative system.

Closing my visit to Paraguay 🇵🇾 after the first National Forestry Congress, where I gave the opening keynote. We also visited degraded forests and explored nature-based solutions for restoration — a reminder of both the
challenges and the possibilities ahead.

Equity in science is still a beautiful lie. After 27 years in Colombia — shaping me as a person and scientist — I begin a new chapter as Distinguished Researcher @csic.es in Spain. Yet I learnt that geography, networks & prestige still outweigh merit, favoring privileged colleagues, conscious or not

‘Megafire’ — you may not like it, but you can’t avoid it.
In our new paper, we argue why a clear, size-based definition (>10,000 ha) of megafire improves research, communication, and fire management globally. 🔥

‘Megafire’—You May Not Like It, But You Cannot Avoid It
Aim The term ‘megafire’ is increasingly used to describe large fires worldwide. We proposed a size-based definition of megafire—fires exceeding 10,000 ha arising from single or multiple related igni.....

Remembering the past—here’s a wonderful interview I shared with Kris Tompkins:
www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/w... I couldn’t stop thinking about it while visiting forests+protected areas created by the Tompkins Found.—places I hadn’t seen back then. An inspiring reminder of what conservation can do! 🌿✨

I used Porto, a simple yet powerful Chrome extension, to transfer my Twitter/X tweets to Bluesky with just one click. The good news: most of my history is now here! The bad news: it didn’t keep the original posting dates—sorry about that!

Scientists, academics, researchers: We’re excited to share that @altmetric.com is now tracking mentions of your research on Bluesky! 🧪
There are already many articles for which there is more attention on Bluesky than on other comparable micro-blogging sites, meaning the academic community and the general public have clearly adopted Bluesky as one of its core places to disseminate and discuss new research.

A Place of Joy.

To follow up on SPI activities @COP16Riyadh presented the recommendations derived from IPCC AR, work that was co lead by Profs. Archer and Anahí (WGII) and Prof. Ravi and myself (WGIII) with the help of all SPI members. Thanks Ravi and Emma for presenting it!

Profs. Annette Cowie & E. Huber presented the 1st SPI technical report, "Sustainable Land Use Systems" at @Cop16Riyadh. A key takeaway: "SLUS integrates land uses to achieve resilience and transformative change." The EU welcomes this vital work for @UNCCD implementation!

Prof. Sergio Vicente-Serrano and Prof. Narcisa Pricope presented the second of the technical reports, in Prof Pricope words. "Aridity is accelerating globally". In addition, the EU welcomes the clarification of the concepts of aridity versus drought and water scarcity. A key issue for all of us!

Great news that acknowledges our work at SPI @UNCCD:
1/ The EU endorses all initiatives to enhance science and welcomes the two reports produced by the SPI.
2/ The SPI needs to be significantly strengthened!
3/ The EU formally supports the establishment of the SPI as a permanent body of the UNCCD.
