horror, sci-fi, weird
most music, but mostly metal (black or death)
(next to) latest read: The Sleeping Dragon - Miyuki Miyabe. This was a weird mystery. What was an otherwise straightforward mystery included a couple of psychics. I don't run across a lot of speculative elements in mysteries. Fascinating.

latest read: In a Lonely Place - Dorothy Hughes -
A nice piece of noir. The time and place are familiar to fans of Raymond Chandler, but the author tells it from the POV of an emotionally unstable vet with no boundaries.

latest read: This Skin Was Once Mine and Other Disturbances - Eric LaRocca - @ericlarocca.bsky.social . Not my usual flavor of horror, but I enjoyed it. My fave - "All the Parts of You That Won't Easily Burn". A weird tale of obsession.

latest read: Corpsemouth - John Langan - (almost) cozy cosmic horror where characters are often at peace with the outcome. In the same vein as his book The Fisherman. Anchor, Outside the House, Watching for the Crows, and Mirror Fishing are the standouts.

latest read: Harlem Shuffle - Colson Whitehead - solid, solid set of crime stories set in '60s Harlem. Unusual in that it focuses on the fence and his life instead of the heist or the cops chasing down the crooks. Excellent all around

latest read: The Devil's Whisper Miyuki Miyabe - what a weird little mystery. A lot of the same "what the..." kinds of moments that I get from Murakami books, but in a story about vengeance and honor

latest read: The Hellbound Heart - Clive Barker. I know the movies but this is the first time I've read the book (or any Clive Barker). It was good but the material was handled much more delicately than I expected.

latest read: Broken Angels - Richard Morgan. This is the Takeshi Kovacs I'd been missing. Much closer to Altered Carbon than Woken Furies, but with more Martian tech.

latest read: The Dead Take The A Train - Cassandra Khaw and Richard Kadrey. This was excellent. Didn't expect the ending but it's good. This was more The All Consuming World and less The Salt Grows Heavy

latest read: The Exile Kiss - George Alec Effinger. Last book of the Budayeen Cycle. Probably not the best book in the trilogy, but still excellent. I will reread all of these again

latest read: Beast in View - Margaret Millar. I like bad movies and this read like a novelization for a bad exploitation film. I counted 9 POV chars in 16 chaps, constant head hopping, unexplained personality shift in the MC. This was a mess. Surprised and disappointed

latest read: The Devil's Detective - Simon Kurt Unsworth. A straightforward detective story but set in a radically different version of Hell. One with jobs and class upheaval.

book #15 Woken Furies - Richard K. Morgan. Not as good as Altered Carbon. I wanted to like it more. The worldbuilding was awesome, but Takeshi spent a lot of time overinvested in anger at the world and it went a little LOTR 'saved by the eagles' right at the end.

book #9 Pay the Piper - George Romero and Daniel Kause Who knew that tentacle monsters in the bayou could be this much fun. The characters accents are a *lot* but I thought it added instead of detracted from story

TBR #8 Horror Movie - Paul Tremblay. Solid horror. I was surprised at how well bouncing back and forth between the main story and the screenplay in the story worked.

TBR #7 A Fire in the Sun - George Alec Effinger. it's the second book in the Marid Audran trilogy and a much different look at cyberpunk (but great) compared to Gibson's sprawl books (Neuromancer, ...). The Budayeen is becoming my favorite cyberpunk ghetto

TBR #6 - The Chinatown Death Cloud Peril - Paul Malmont. A lot of the noir fix I was looking for. Pulp authors as characters in a pulp story, doing pulp stuff.
