two weeks of grinding out edits, but finally got last year's space horror into the hands of some beta readers. it's still rough but they're doing me a solid and putting eyes on it

latest read: Horrorstör - Grady Hendrix. slow build and then the horror went from a 2 to a 9 in about a chapter. stayed pretty relentless for the rest of the book

latest read: All She Was Worth - Miyuki Miyabe - 3rd Miyabe book I've read. Just as quirky as the others. I really liked the ending, not expected.

well, hello there Clockwork Orange, it's been a while. We're not quite to moloko vellocet yet, but it feels like 2026 is going to be the year we see caffeinated milk in schools

1st read of '26: Not a Speck of Light - Laird Barron - @lairdbarron.bsky.social
- 'Blood in My Mouth' and 'Tiptoe' were exceptional. All around solid horror short stories, with some overlap (big fan). All of them Alaska winter bleak.

finished the ugly 1st draft for the new WIP. faster, but messier than the one I finished back in March. guess we'll see how the edits go

watched Fatman this weekend and was blown away by Walter Coggins ("Skinny Man"). Every line, every action was malice and menace. Such an efficient depiction of villainy. it was amazing

latest read: no one will come back for us - premee mohammed - ‪@premeemohamed.com. A fun collection of (often cosmic) horror short stories. I really enjoyed that several touched the same shared world from a few different angles. The Evaluator was my fave

(next to) latest read: The Sleeping Dragon - Miyuki Miyabe. This was a weird mystery. What was an otherwise straightforward mystery included a couple of psychics. I don't run across a lot of speculative elements in mysteries. Fascinating.

finished Nov. @ 22k on the new WIP. There's a solid chance I can finish the 1st draft by the end of the year

I'm very sad to share the news that our lovely @chaoticauthor.online has passed away. His ending was peaceful and surrounded with love but came far too quickly after a short battle with pancreatic cancer.

I've known Matt for years. He was a warm, gentle, generous, all-weather friend. I miss him.

latest read: In a Lonely Place - Dorothy Hughes -
A nice piece of noir. The time and place are familiar to fans of Raymond Chandler, but the author tells it from the POV of an emotionally unstable vet with no boundaries.

Hopefully, it's an A24 production. Otherwise, it's awkward when I call out their awesomeness. Frank Miller's name might sneak in for Sin City's contribution to contemporary noir and adding monsters to the mix

Q4 - CREDITS

Obviously, we’re staying through all of the credits to acknowledge the work of the artists, the musicians, the designers, the directors…etc.

#HorrorWritersChat - Shout out some of the horror creatives you admire and share what they do.

Stay around for the outro to share your work.

Bourbon, dim sum, and bloody red velvet cake. The booze and blood flow. And everyone likes dim sum

#HorrorWritersChat
Q3 - INTERMISSION

Time for a refreshment break.

We head over to the concession stand and discover that all the food and drink are themed on your work.

#HorrorWritersChat - What refreshments are we enjoying and how are they related to your work?

Hugo Weaving is Weird Rey (antag). He radiates maniacal menace. The protag is tougher. I would need a young, charming meathead.

Q2 - COMING SOON

It’s time for the trailers.

And look #HorrorWritersChat - it’s a trailer for your very own horror work, adapted for the screen. Congrats!

Which work is it?

And which actor is playing your main protagonist, antagonist or fave character? Share your dream cast!

I'm Joe and I write sci-fi horror. For the vibes, Blue Velvet and The Devil Conspiracy. One starts normal and takes it to an absurd extreme. The other is an absurd premise and gets told straightforward. That transition between normal and absurd is what I love and try to bring

Q1 - DOUBLE FEATURE

Glad you could join our (virtual) cinema trip!

First, let's introduce ourselves and share the horror subgenres we write in.

Now, what are we watching?

Share the two movies/films that have inspired your writing or that capture the vibes of your work.

my two favorite fake AI words of the day - volating and runctious. FWIW, I'm going to try and spend the rest of my day volating, possibly in a runctious manner

latest read: This Skin Was Once Mine and Other Disturbances - Eric LaRocca - @ericlarocca.bsky.social . Not my usual flavor of horror, but I enjoyed it. My fave - "All the Parts of You That Won't Easily Burn". A weird tale of obsession.

Visiting? Elisa. Not my absolute favorite, but easily the most fun. Some of those others ... not so fun.

There’s a knock at the door.

Before you can answer it, the door opens and reveals…your favourite character. They are your creation.

Why are they your favourite?
And why are they here, now?

I have to have something to drink and something for the noise. Right now, that tends to be endless coffee and metal, both black. Headphones let me keep it to myself.

#HorrorWritersChat
QUESTION TWO

We stand before your writing area #HorrorWritersChat

Which three tools (apps? Items? objects?) do you find useful when writing?

Are there any you’d recommend to other writers?

The stranger the better...
