Mixed in with hazy recollections of her parents smiling and laughing, are much clearer images of Sasha teaching her how to summon her light, so quick to praise her when she gets it. Solnyshka, he calls her, in a voice more familiar than her own. He is only a few years older than she is, and he is her first friend. When she’s little, adults are charmed and amused when she tells them about him. Lots of children have imaginary friends, after all. As time passes, the reactions to her stories are less amused and more judging or concerned. A child of four might be expected to have an imaginary friend, but a child of twelve is certainly too old for such things. She learns to stop mentioning him; it’s fine because he never leaves her, a constant presence in her dreams. By the time she graduates high school and becomes an adult, she has accepted that he’s nothing more than a figment of her imagination. Just a dream man that her mind created. That doesn’t stop her from finding comfort in her memories of him, fabricated though they may be, or from looking forward to bedtime when she knows she’ll see him again. He’s not real, but after years of having him in her mind and in her heart, how can anyone else measure up?
