I've been told this is useful, so here's a quick explanation of how I think about space while drawing the human figure
An example drawing and a diagram explaining how I view space while drawing people. Summary: It all comes down to relative size of body parts to each other. Imagine you are looking at the scene and realize what is closest to you. That should be relatively the biggest. I say relatively because usually your foot is about the size of your head. In the example drawing, the foot is bigger than the head because it is closer to you as the viewer.
