Day 1/20

Entered my notes app to jot down a riddle idea (16 yo loves them) and this is what greeted me.
I‘ve no idea when I wrote or dictated/pocket-typed this but it’s a pretty accurate portrait of my brain at least daily.

Perhaps instead of congratulating yourselves so broadly you might address a major issue of inclusion at your institution?

Maryse Leclair was the last woman killed. She was a top student, entering final year of the metallurgy program. She had acted in high school and junior college, but concentrated more on her studies in university. Creative & intelligent, the gifts she would’ve given this country are countless.

Anne-Marie Lemay was 22. She would be 57 today. She was in 4th yr of mechanical engineering, part of a class of amazing women. She was an active member of clubs including the yearbook. Her friend, survivor and gun control advocate Heidi Rathjen remembers her as "a wonderful girl, total sweetheart."
December 6, 2024 at 2:27 PM
Annie Turcotte was the youngest. She’d be only 55 today. A 1st yr in metallurgical engineering, she and her brother rented a small apartment near the university where they supported each other as they pursued higher education.

Annie St-Arneault was listening to a presentation in her very last class before graduation. She made sure to show up for her classmate even tho she could've easily ditched. She was also from a remote community and had made her way to the school through her own grit and smarts.
December 6, 2024 at 2:27 PM
Sonia Pelletier was the head of her class in mechanical engineering. A rural student, she came from a large family, all of whom were so proud that their sister was due to graduate the next day. She was looking forward to a job interview the next week.
December 6, 2024 at 2:27 PM
Maryse Laganiere was the only non-student killed. She was an employee at the university– a budget clerk. She was also a newlywed. She would be 60 today. An entire life spread before her and stolen before it had a chance to start.

Barbara Maria Klucznik, 31, the oldest of the victims, was a first-year nursing student. She arrived in Montreal from Poland with her husband in 1987. She would be 66 today. She survived years of the communist regime in Poland, leaving with her husband when she was 29.

Michele Richard is the second year student who was presenting with Maud. She would be 56 today. Perhaps Haviernick would’ve inspired her to take her education even further, pursuing a second degree or Masters. Or perhaps she would’ve graduated and pursued a happiness of her own. We will never know.
December 6, 2024 at 2:27 PM
Maud Haviernick, 2nd yr in metallurgical engineering would be 64 today. She already had one degree under her belt from UQaM (Environmental design) and was mentoring a student through their in-class presentation when she was killed. This was a woman who had a wealth of knowledge which is now lost.

Anne-Marie Edward, 21, was in her 1st yr of chemical engineering. She loved the outdoors. With her chemical engineering knowledge and her affinity for outdoor pursuits, I imagine her pursuing a career in environmental protection or climate science, a field we all need more scholarship in.
December 6, 2024 at 2:27 PM
Barbara Daigneault, 22, was also in her final year of mechanical engineering. So young and only in an undergraduate program but already held a teaching assistantship position. The professor she assisted was her own father. Today, perhaps she would be the professor, her daughter or son at her side.
