Snoop Dogg - Doggy Style

I know Snoop Dogg as a personality is considered a legend, but I just can't finish this.

I can't comment on the use of that certain word, it is not my culture. But the level of misogyny on this is disgusting, for any era.

Great night with the youngest watching English Teacher at The Foundry, Sheffield.

They build their set so we'll, starting with their art-rock and building to their more noise-rock tracks.

The Orielles were a good support act also. Will seek out their stuff again.

My view for English Teacher at The Foundry, Sheffield tonight with the youngest.

I'd go closer. But fear my stick might get kicked out

The Auteurs - New Wave

Not familiar with their work, but enjoyed this. At different times it reminded my of some of the Britpop adjacent band's that I enjoyed around this time like Mansun, Gene and My Life Story.

Jacob Alon - In Limerence

Maybe my favourite debut of the year. So vulnerable and enchanting at the same time. Their style is unique, but in their vocals, you'd often swear you were listening to Sin-é era Jeff Buckley.

Parliament - Mothership Connection

This is some of the smoothest funk. Smooth with a capital smooo, as the Cat would say.

Though the less said about the ridiculous final track, the better.

Catching up a bit because I forgot to post the last few albums

The Renaissance - Q Tip

Didn't really do anything for me. Not as good as some of the other hip-hop on the list. And as it's not my genre, just okay hip-hop isn't for me.

The Cure - Head on the door.

This was arguably the album where The Cure first successfully blended their gloomy and poppy sides. Both had been evident before, but rarely so consistently mixed as this album.

Album #72 Miles Davis - In a silent way.

Best jazz album so far. The lack of random sound explosions and the infused use of calming early electronica makes this much more palatable to someone like me than most jazz.

Suede - Antidepressants

One of my favourite new albums from this year. It is perfect for Anderson's more limited vocals these days. Elements of 80s goth rock and post punk, modern spoken word delivery and classic Suede ballads make for a unique piece.

AC/DC - Back in Black

Hard rock isn't usually my go to style but have a real soft spot for AC/DC. My old mate used to play them all the time and a lot of it stuck.

This is arguably their best effort.

The Psychedelic Furs - Talk Talk Talk

More post punk goodness. Any album with tracks that inspired a John Hughes movie is good with me.

The Clash - London Calling

Depending on your point of view: either Punk's high water mark, or a post-punks defining album. Either way it is exceptional.

And an iconic cover to boot.

Album #69 (why am I laughing? I'm 44!)

Guns 'N' Roses - Appetite for Destruction.

How many debut albums can claim to have three stone cold classics that everyone will recognise? Arguably some filler elsewhere, but still a great album.

Calexico - Feast of Wire

Proper eclectic album. No two tracks are the same style. More like a 'various artist' compilation than one band
Makes it quite hard to work out how much I like it, but I certainly didn't dislike it.

Album #66 Franz Ferdinand - self titled.

Never really got into Franz Ferdinand but this is pretty good. Certainly a band who knew their sound and didn't deviate from it. Makes for a consistent album without any real filler.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - Henry's Dream.

Not their absolute top effort but rarely has a Nick Cave album more encapsulated the variety of his style. Equal parts violent, romantic and mournful.

Herbie Hancock - Head Hunters

This has to be the Funkiest Funk that ever did Funk. Not entirely sure I enjoyed it, but it feels like the definition of jazz-funk.

The Monkees - Headquarters.

Bit of a revelation. I've always dismissed The Monkees as mass produced kiddy pop but this, their first album with creative control, is different. More mature, and in places darkly challenging, than I expected.

Simon and Garfunkle - Bridge over troubled water.

My dad played this so often in the car when I was growing up that it is a nostalgic piece of my childhood.
Still holds up.

Really enjoyed this. Swinging from Indie Dance to pure Pop, with sprinkles and samples mixed in. It is quite eclectic, but works well as a whole regardless.

PJ Harvey - To bring you my love (Demos)

The original is easily in my top 10 albums and this demo version adds a new dimension. Without the strings and other instruments, this stripped down, raw style is more reminiscent of her 'Rid of Me' style. Still excellent.

Creedence Clearwater Revival - Green River

Apparently this was the 2nd of 3 albums CCR released that year, which is an incredible output. You can't tell though as this is very good. Would easily pass as an album they took years honing.

The Smiths - Meat is Murder

Between their preference for non-album singles (captured in the great compilation Hatful of Hollow) and the brilliance of Queen is Dead, this can often be lost. But it is a great album in its own right.

Gaz Coombs - Here come the bombs.

The first of several excellent solo albums. Full of interesting sounds and loops.
