Dry Cleaning - Secret Love

Cheating a bit as this came out last Friday. But have listened to it 3 times since then and love it.

Post punk meets art rock meets poetry. Found this really compelling and even with the unconventional melodies, you can't help but tap along.

FKA Twigs - LP1

Enjoyed this. R&B is generally not my style. But when put through avant-pop and elecronica filters, what comes out the other end is very good.

Nailed on #5DebutAlbums9094 choice:

PJ Harvey -Dry

Might not be the full on goddess she would become, but the genius was there for all to see from the start.

Still feels like music's leading edge to this day.

Marvin Gaye - Let's get it on.

Before there was Netflix and Chill there was Marvin and Chill. Unabashedly sexually charged, but deep down it is smooth, stylish and oh so soulful.

Stan Getz and Charlie Byrd - Jazz Samba

The Ronseal of album names. You know exactly what you're getting. Bossa-nova samba with extra jazz sax makes a great upbeat mix.

Great background music to proofread to.

Next #5DebutAlbums9094 contender:

The Cranberries - Everybody else is doing it, so why can't we?

Easy to forget how accomplished and atmospheric the music here is. Your ear goes to the melodic songs and O'Riorden's stunning vocals, but below it is a goth-rock classic.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - Lovely creatures.

My Nick Cave vinyl collection is coming along well, but there are still some gaps. This compilation CD will fill some gaps for now.

Great song choices but so many absolute greats didn't make the cut.

Sparks - The Steady Drip Drip Drip

My love for recent era Sparks continues to grow. So different to pretty much everything else I listen to, but so entertaining.

This version has gorgeous florescent and tactile sleeves. Could have used a splatter disc to complete it.

Butthole Surfers -Locust Abortion Technician

Usually like experimental stuff, and noise rock, but this is too far for me to be honest. Has it moments, and it is clearly supposed to be jarring, but just steps a little too far for my tastes.

Scritti Politti - Cupid & Psyche 85

If your kids ever ask you what it was like in Britain in the 1980s, just play them this. Never going to be the best album you could play them, but nothing sound more quintessentially '80s pop than this.

Maybe my 'out-there' option for #5DebutAlbums9094.

Dee-lite - World Clique

Only discovered this in recent years but it is so good. Everyone knows Groove is in the Heart, but there is so much more to love on here. Funky dance tunes with unique loops and sampling.

Rolling Stones - Beggars Banquet

The randomiser has thrown up two Stones albums in a row. But when the albums are good, who cares?

This one is more blues rock, and almost honky-tonk in places.

Sympathy... is and all time classic.

David Bowie - The man who sold the world.

Not as well remembered as what was to come, but for me, this is when Bowie started to find a voice.

And the title track is my favourite #Bowie song.

Today it just felt right to play this.

David Bowie - Blackstar

Released just 2 days before his death, Bowie left us with one more classic album.

Experimental to the end, this is like no other Bowie album. More electronic sounds and looping, but works well.

Back to a very strong #5DebutAlbums9094 contender.

Portishead - Dummy.

Outstanding soundscape of an album. Probably Trip-hop's crowning masterpiece.

For 30 years now, this has been my go to chill-out album after a good night out.

Next option for #5DebutAlbums9094 :
Hole - Pretty on the inside

Love a raw debut, and this was certainly raw. Punkish noise rock.

They would perfect their style with the brilliant Live Through This, but nothing would ever be as loud as this.

Now let's get a re-release!

Not seen much love for this so far in people's #5DebutAlbums9094 suggestions, but it means a lot to me.

Counting Crows - August and Everything After

Few records get heavier play in our house, in part because it was the one album Mel and I agreed on since day one.

Teenage Fanclub - Bandwagonesque

Any album that beat both Nevermind and Out of Time to album of the year in some publications must be pretty decent.
Feels like the band took trashy pop love songs and gave them a modern, Alt-rock twist.

Think narrowing down to #5DebutAlbums9094 is going to take some time, so I'll start with the obvious one.

Jeff Buckley - Grace

Perfect. Can't see anything else winning to be honest despite all the great options. My kids were essentially raised on this album.

Seems an ideal mid-point album for the band. Increasing amounts of synth dance in there but still driven by Peter Hook's exceptional atmospheric base lines.

John Prine - self titled.

Bit of an album of two sides. The first two-thirds is some of the best protest songs I've ever heard which, given recent events, seem more vital than ever.
Then the last third slips into generic country tropes.

Supergrass - I should coco.

Of all the great British music I grew up with in the 90s, nothing encapsulated being young at the time more than this album.

Saw them perform it live last year and it still got crippled old me bouncing.
