Can we expect less diversity and complexity across marine ecosystems in an acidified ocean? Sadly, this looks likely based on research by Nuria Teixido and others. A quick reminder to continue to advocate for a net zero future. #EMBS2025 Thanks for another fantastic and inspiring keynote talk

Excited to attend my first EMBS conference. What a wonderful start to the conference, some great talks, some clear challenging times ahead as the marine scientific community, will need to accurately inform governments around restoration and the best options for 30% by 2030. We can do this 💪 🐋

@juliettewaterman.bsky.social had such a great time at zooarchisotopes.com/back-to-the-... thanks so much for organising. I look forward to our future chats about using the past to inform the present for species conservation and restoration.

When you’re giving a talk online but you’re working from home because you’ve ruptured your Achilles, what a look #rehablife. A big thanks to #ColumbiaSystemsBiology for having me. Some great discussions around #microbiomes and #functionalgenomics 😊 excited to start my next chapter

A Comment article in Nature highlights the early results from a large multinational survey to gain insights into what makes people happy, secure and hopeful and calls on governments around the world to step up and do more. 🧪

A sad day for the critically endangered North Atlantic right whale 😥 slowing down shipping traffic in key whale habitat is a clear solution for the protection of this species; I’d happily receive parcels three weeks later (or not at all) if it meant no whale casualties in the process. #slowtheships

Happy to announce a successful field trip for Penguin Watch; the project uses camera traps and 3D imaging of penguin colonies to monitor brush-tailed penguin populations across the Antarctic. A huge thanks to National Geographic Lindblad and all involved for getting us down there this season 🐧 📷 🧊

Merry Xmas …with a little hint of chatGPT
Lab coat on, time to go,
In the lab, all aglow,
Crunching numbers, tests to run,
But it's Christmas — none of that fun! Flasks to fill, papers to write,
Experiments that must take flight,
While the world celebrates cheer,
I’m still here, just one more year!

Did someone say good news Mondays? www.reuters.com/world/europe... Deep sea Arctic sea beds and hydrothermal vents are rare homes to many unique, often endemic species. Great to see this relatively understudied marine habitat protected (at least for now).
Norway to stop deep-sea mining, says party supporting minority government
Norway will not proceed with plans to conduct deep-sea mining, the SV party which supports the minority centre-left government said on Sunday, after it concluded negotiations over next year's budget with the coalition.

It was lovely to read about the successful rescue mission of a stranded group of pilot whales in New Zealand this week. Congratulations to all involved. www.bbc.com/news/article...
More than 30 stranded whales rescued in New Zealand
None of the rescued whales were re-stranded, but three adults and one calf died, authorities said.

The IWC has just published its Status of Whales webpages. This represents a huge amount of work by the amazing group of people in our SC. Simple graphics to show whether populations are moving towards extinction or recovery, how this status has changed over a 20-year period. iwc.int/resources/me...

By strapping acoustic tags onto 6 turtles over 10 days 🐢 , this study found that ~75% of acoustic samples had detectable human-made sound from boats & shipping ⛴️🛳️🚢 (at frequencies between the low end & punch of a kick drum)

These sounds were very often as loud as fireworks 😬🎇🎆
