The first time I saw something like this was in the AA_stat manuscript

Passage is Canadian internal waters or an international waterway for mostly the same reasons.

In sum, these are all just aggressive manifestations of long-held US policy (made more urgent by global warming), and probably only tangentially related to China.

On the Panama Canal thing, that’s also a longstanding US policy that predates China’s rise. Obviously the US’s interest in it is more than 100 years old at this point because of its strategic importance. But the US also has a longstanding disagreement with Canada over whether or not the Northwest

Greenland has been in the US’s sights for a long time… there’s a whole Wikipedia page for attempts to buy it! First it was about preventing hostile powers from gaining a foothold in the Western Hemisphere, then missile defense and submarine tracking.

The US is always planning for a war with China, but that doesn’t mean this is about China.

There are already large reserves of REEs in the US (and close allies like Australia), the production has just moved overseas for environmental and legal reasons.
