Just saw Paul Thomas Anderson's masterful documentary excuse me film "One Battle After Another" in the cinema. A masterpiece. I hope all the Christmas Adventure Club types on the right see it and wonder how PTA snuck a hidden camera into their country clubs. www.nytimes.com/2025/09/25/m...

Good. Nice to hear some politician say it. By any measure, the existence of billionaires is a massive failure of economics and tax policy. Not even counting their corrosive effect on democracy, and Caligula-levels of personal crassness.

How is it possible that Josh Hawley is on the right side and Dick Durbin is on the wrong side with respect to the GENIUS act? Broken clocks etc. www.nytimes.com/2025/06/06/b...

It's not the absolute worst thing the government is trying to do right now, but it might be close. The "GENIUS" act uses your tax dollars to guarantee and underwrite criminal activity, grift, Ponzi schemes and outright fraud. Write your senator!!! econjared.substack.com/p/crytpo-the...

I wrote a fun little paper using triangulations to give a new construction of simple ReLU networks to compute arbitrary PL functions, and using hyperbolic geometry to (lower) bound the complexity of the construction.

The New York Times is the first to put out comprehensive estimates on the cost of a year without U.S.A.I.D. and they’re higher than I thought:
- 1.65 million deaths from AIDS
- 500,000 from lack of vaccines
- 550,000 from lack of food aid
- 290,000 from malaria
- 310,000 from TB
Killing children is by design, I'm afraid. "Pro-natalists" like Musk claim they aren't racist, but their pressure to have children is solely focused on white women, while they back policies that literally kill of non-white children.

He's a eugenicist.

A journey through the front lines of global poverty shows that when the world’s richest men slash aid for the world’s poorest children, the result is sickness, starvation and death.

Oof. I got stopped by a Mormon teenager outside Powell’s books this morning; he asked me if I’ve read the Book of Mormon, and told me it will “change my life”. I asked him how many books he has read in his life (total). He said “ten”. [1/2]

Instead of BPTT algorithm for backprop in a RNN, treat RNN as cellular automaton. Each time increment do one local compute of the RNN *and* one local compute of backprop. This simultaneously adjusts weights and gradient computations at each node, and is as cheap as backprop in an acyclic network.

Email from SLMath (formerly MSRI) as a result of executive ordered confusion at NSF, asks participants in 2025/26 programs (of which I am one) to hold off on making any kind of financial activities related to SLMath activities we are participating in (eg lodging deposits, visa application fees etc)

I wonder what exactly is being lumped under the heading "green new deal"? Is the NSF going to cease funding for research into nuclear fusion reactors, or "just" wind/geothermal/solar?
