I remember listening to early Critical Role about ten years ago when I first started getting more into #dnd. Liam O'Brien picked up a rock and a bucket that he just decided would be in an area, without checking with Matt.
It made sense. It was a great plan. It was such great player agency in action

Along with this, I think it's nice sometimes to play games that just happen in our world, or something very equivalent. Have them play "true to self" and get comfortable there, and then take that comfort into lands more unlike our own.
