We've had "Traumazone" (about the late Soviet era and Yeltsin era Russia) and "Shifty", so I guess that the next logical stop is an America-centric take on this narrationless documentary series thing? Or maybe he'll try something else. Whatever it is, I'll probably still end up watching it.

Just finished watching the new Adam Curtis series, "Shifty". It took a while for the central thesis to come through, and I'm not sure that he was really saying anything new...but, as always, the archival footage was fascinating, the micro stories were interesting, and there was a great soundtrack.

My midweek live music jolly this evening was Snapped Ankles. Band on top form, and a strong turnout for a midweek gig night.

To paraphrase the title of the band's latest LP, these may be hard times, but I did much furious dancing.

Undertaking some stuff-sifting (long story), and came across this first indicator that perhaps young Dan, aged 14, was drifting in the direction of academia from much earlier than I realised... (The handwriting has improved a bit since then, thankfully.)

Looking forward to my first classes tomorrow for "African American Literature". We are covering historical context and background, introducing Paul Gilroy's "Black Atlantic" as a way to engage with African American literature, and discussing the poetry of Phillis Wheatley.

I had my first day of teaching in Semester 2 today. Tuesdays are my Film Studies teaching day, and Thursdays and Fridays are my English Literature days this term.

It was a fairly full on day with a lot of interesting stuff to cover....

Give me a single image from a film that immediately makes you hear the song from the soundtrack playing in your head.
