Currently sitting in a University of Kentucky Board of Trustees meeting with a HUGE faculty turnout.

That's not a coincidence.

The first item on the agenda is a Deloitte consultant recommending that the Board strip the University Senate of much of its authority over academic regulations.

Check out this new preprint from first author @svenklumpe.bsky.social and coworkers (primarily Plitsko and Beck labs at Max Planck) describing Copia retrotransposon capsids inside cells. Fig 3 is so dope. Look at that capsid array! Beautiful work! 😍🤩

Over 4 years in the making, I am extremely happy to share our pre-print on the “In-cell structure and snapshots of copia retrotransposons in intact tissue”. We used cryo-ET to resolve the copia capsid structure to subnanometer resolution inside cells: www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

I see this all the time - you don't need to wait for a journal to ask you to review - JUST REVIEW THE PREPRINT and post your review!

We do it all the time: fraserlab.com/reviews

The majority of the time, a journal asks us to include the review in their process AFTER we post!

Got asked by the 6yo how did first humans show up on earth. I hope I did a passable answer. Long ago there were a lot of human like animals, but like the Dodo and dinosaurs, most of them are now gone… It could have gone a different way, but it went this way. So, here we are, in bed, trying to sleep

Preprint! 📜
We developed structure-guided method for solenoid protein repeat annotation. We tested and applied it to Leucine Rich Repeat (these look like "slinky" in 3D). Boyan Xu, PhD candidate in our lab led the work together with colleagues. doi.org/10.1101/2023...

Hi! I'm a microbiologist at the University of Pittsburgh, studying how hosts and microbes co-evolve. My lab focuses on battles between bacteria and microeukaryotes and how this can lead to new disease emergence. Looking forward to meeting new folks here!
