Yesterday the @biosb.bsky.social and Netherlands Integrative Microbial Ecology initiative organised a symposium on #MicrobialEcology. We hosted 80+ researchers, with 10 talks and 10 posters at @utrechtuniversity.bsky.social. A beautiful chance to hear more about exciting research across the country!

Closing the session, Saioa Manzano-Morales @microbiobits.bsky.social from the Barcelona supercomputing center, told us about their recent inferences of gene origins in the context of eukaryogenesis. Read more here:

Marek Valt from Charles University then presented their very cool finding of Solarion arienae, a protist representing a novel high ranking taxon, with interesting cellular features bringing information about the early evolution of eukaryotes.

The second invited speaker, @anja1.bsky.social from @niozsearesearch.bsky.social gave a beautiful overview of recent work on archaeal evolution, including the domain's root, the inferred properties of the last archaeal common ancestor, and the dynamics of archaeal genome evolution.

Then @kassipan.bsky.social from Wageningen University showed her PhD work to expand the genome diversity in the PVC superphylum, finding multiple phylum-level lineages and opening a door to investigating the cool cellular features in this phylum.

Next, Romain Leroy from @deemteam.bsky.social at Paris Saclay showed his PhD work including a strong effort to expand the taxon and gene sampling and apply state-of-the-art methods to reconstruct the early evolution of eukaryotes.
