The conventional wisdom says that checks and balances forestall the abuse of power. But our particular system constrains the public far more than it constrains elites. By obstructing ambitious political changes, it enables those who benefit from the status quo to protect their powers and privileges.
The Dead End of Checks and Balances - Boston Review
Far from the cure to Trumpian authoritarianism, the U.S. constitutional system is driving our democratic decline.

“In every Supreme Court case in the last decade involving religious resistance to an equality norm, equality has lost. The implications, for our civil rights laws and those they aim to protect, are grave.”

Progressives should always understand that the rule of law is the last and most crucial line of defense in the struggle for justice. A term like "libertarian socialism" makes sense only if taken literally to indicate that within classical liberalism is a rational kernel that must be saved.

This is true. To which one should add that corporate governance is oligarhic not democratic in form. In content add the desire for retribution and the elimination of enemies and undesirables and then we start to take the full measure of neofascism's arrival in America.
“Make no mistake, what’s happening right now is a hostile takeover of the federal government by a private agency operating with a broad mandate and no concerns for the stability of the United States or the interests of the average American.”

In the context of the U.S. economy today, we can be sure that taxing imports won’t help the working class. Reducing inequality entails more than reducing corporate profits; it requires reducing the share of income going to high earners.

It is Americans’ exceptional exposure to capitalism that makes them exceptionally vulnerable to the opioid epidemic. And yet U.S. exceptionalism makes that fact so roundly impossible for the political establishment to acknowledge. Instead, for 30 years, it has focused—laserlike—on the border.

Interesting political developments this week:

Trump's emissary to Israel apparently giving Bibi the proverbial offer he can't refuse (will far right rebel?) and meanwhile Trump team trying to calm a nervous stock market announces that tariff increases will be on the order of 5% or less.
