I would bet my eyeteeth that those boys are all Trumpers, if they're still alive and able to vote. I'd bet the mother is too.

The signs have been there for a long time.

No real moral to the story. Part of me wishes I had said or done something. Dumped them on the side of the road or at the nearest gas station or whatever.

Unfortunately, I tend to freeze.

The mother asked me to hang out so she could get a ride back with me. "This was very comfortable," she said with a wide smile.

I just looked ahead, said, "Uh huh," and switched my apps off the second they were in my taillights.

It was all so casual.

Of coercing her into marriage to someone who had already proved incredibly violent.

I was trembling when I dropped them off. It was Kansas. I was outnumbered. They were on camera, but I wasn't sure if they had one of those things with them at the moment.

He kept laughing, him and Wingman. "Just point it at her head and tell her you'll x her if she doesn't stay with you."

They laughed, all of them, even the mother. They kept making light of threatening this poor pregnant teenage girl with a deadly weapon.

Son laughs alongside him but seems unsure as to what Best Friend means, but BF is happy to elaborate.

"You don't load it, of course. And you can tell her that. And then you can say well, I could be lying. You never know, do you?"

The son said that he didn't care, that he loved her, but that she was done with him ever since he had hit her, "Just that one time."

Best Friend laughs and says, "That's when you pull out (🔫), right?" (he did name the type, I just don't have a head for remembering what it was specifically)

Of the two friends, there was the Best Friend and the Wingman. Wingman nodded and goaded on everything Best Friend was saying.

Best Friend told the son, "You have to be sure it's yours before you marry her, otherwise she's trapping you."
The mother, in this, was silent.

(food deserts, am I right?)

In the course of the drive I found out that the son's girlfriend, or, sort of on-and-off again first love, was pregnant. He was not fully sure it was his, but he wanted it to be, he kept saying.

I was driving a van at the time. The mother sat beside me in the passenger seat, the boys crowded into the back along with their bags for shopping. I picked them up at a hotel outside the race track in Kansas, and was taking them a fair distance (25-30 minute drive) to a "local" Walmart.
