What the fuck do you think made people join this site in the first place lol
We know who's paying you. It's your venture capitalists. Whatcha think will happen after a massive exodus, projecting the site to be a failure?
You're betting that wont happen. Hope you're prepared to be dead wrong.

The video Owen linked is an incredible showcase of Adam and Swirsky doing this, though I wanted to show how sometimes its even worth breaking apart the form manually for an extra bit of layering and visual hierarchy. Requires a lot more work, but it can pay off esp. when the art is largely flat.

On castle we used lotsa "microgradiation" & for cuts that were absolutely essential to get right, especially scenes with a low amount of movement, we'd dress out the character art with polish dramatically. It's a value add that IS noticeable.
One such example:

Sometimes, #animation cuts are just a still image of very detailed #art. When that happens, it only makes sense for me to go a little extra!
For one sequence in Castlevania Season 3, I was in charge of plussing a very... intimate moment, so here's some steps that went into that 😳🙈💖

If @oweeeeendennis.bsky.social just wants a preset that takes in a color & a midtone i can whip something up but it'd be reallly basic LOL, if you dont mind an example tomorrow!

...on an above layer, doing something like the original colors set to "luminance" blend mode and adjusting it to half or w/e feels right. This will get you most of the way there. It wont account for some things we often want to do like darker midtones for silk etc getting washed out, but its a start

my own *personal* preferences though include slapping down some color cards set to multiply and/or overlay of the background color mixed in with the sun color (mayyyybe setting the sun one to add, since thats how it works IRL), and doing the same but darker for the shadow tones, then...

🤔the question is confusing, are yall asking a quick way to get characters to match the background color generally?
Yeah there really isn't a one and done way to do that, certainly no plugin that does it. What we usually do is separate the midtones and shadows & just kinda... wing it 😂

Thank youuuu ❤️
That cut ended up getting used for the trailer--because of course, it's a great shot and Adam's comp work was sublime--and knowing that might happen I knew we had to nail the look haha. Glad you think so!!

We didn't have access to Nuke for Nocturne, but I managed to use AE in a similar way with some effects like CC Composite and Set Matte and a few nested compositions haha.
The end result is a track job that gives way more dimension and shape than you'd get from a basic flat pattern track!

The majority of the actual compositing in this cut was done by @adamdeats.bsky.social (you can thank him for the "final polish" part haha), but the pattern tracking + making it consistent with other cuts was all me :D
