I eventually figured out how to get an explanation and yep- okay sure got it.
I've decided that this character, Zidane, will always keep this ability equipped despite my being now 25 hours in to the game and never seeing it do anything at all.

Final Fantasy UIs can be a bit obtuse, but one of my favorite things to do when starting any game is open the menu, see what my characters have in their inventory and figure out what their deal is. So seeing "protect girls" with almost no context in #FinalFantasyIX was absolutely hilarious!
