Yeah at that time cars were influencing all architects, even in Europe. Le Corbusier wanted to demolish half of Paris to have high-rises and highways. Fortunately, they didn't listen to him. But those plans did influence later housing projects in the US and Europe, nearly all disastrous.

The original, pre WWII conception of suburbs was based on train access to "garden cities" away from polluted industrial city cores. It wasn't based on cars. This image is from "Garden Cities of Tomorrow", published in 1898:
