My doggo Arran SENSES 3pm. She decided that's ball time, and every day anyone is home at 3pm she will come and do her ball dance until you to outside and play ball with her.

Highlight of my day was not just having lunch with the amazing Claudia Goldin, but learning she's responsible for my favourite kitchen item: my ice cream scoop.

She has not just been an inspiration for my professional life but has also directly, heavily improved my personal life!

What a star.

Last day of #SOLE in Toronto. I love my home town so much. It's such a wonderful city. Top 5 in the world for me. Food, people, vibe, liveable ❤️ already miss it! (also SOLE was awesome and labour economists are such great folks!)

This cardinal comes by my window every morning now, perches outside and yells out to its partner on a nearby tree. I wonder if he's watching our morning routine like @bakerdphd.bsky.social watches reality shows

My husband made pork belly tonight and I thought it was the right time to bring this guy out as the pairing. Omg was I right.

DELICIOUS.

Also, this is what I want to do for a living. Pairings. What a life.

Finally! Day 24 is a MASSIVE treat! The Balvenie 30yo!!

Nose: complex, red fruit, oak, toffee, so powerful you can almost taste it if you nose with an open mouth. Leather and library after the first taste.

Day 23 is the Teeling vintage reserve, 30yo from 1991.

Nose: peach, caramel, stone fruit, vanilla. Very Irish.

Palate: dry, quite sharp, a lot sharper than I'd have expected for an Irish whiskey. Honey, a bit zesty. Xmas sweets (marzipan maybe?)

Day 22 is the Longmorn 23yo, Secret Speyside Collection.

Nose: light fruity nose, orange peel

Palate: creamy, brown sugar, pear, ginger

Finish: warm finish, baking spices rounds out the cookie palate.

Not much on the nose, but really lovely dram!
December 22, 2024 at 10:41 PM
Day 21 is from one of my favourite bottlers, That Boutique-y Whisky Company! A 31yo Glen Grant (batch 2).

Nose: orange peel, fig, grass, forest fruits, musty (smells like an old cellar)

Palate: well rounded, butterscotch, light oak, pineapple.

Day 20 is a 30yo Glenturret, 2024 release.

Nose: bubblegum. All I get is bubblegum.

Palate: quite smooth, maple syrup, raisins and sultanas.

Finish: short, still sweet, simple and nice.

Still, quite simple for a 30yo. Feels like it would have some sharper notes if it wasn't 40.6%.

Day 19 is a treat!!! The Balvenie 25yo Rare Marriages, at 48%.

Nose: sponge cake, orange peel, honey and ginger tea.

Palate: SO SMOOTH... Buttery and creamy, just delicious. More ginger, oak, builds into a zesty lemon burst.

Day 18 is the Caperdonich 30yo at 53.6%.

Nose: right away, acetone. But then somehow it becomes strawberries and cream (such is the magic of whisky)

Palate: harsh, given the ABV not surprising, but fruity. Better with water. Tangy, tart fruit, like pineapple or blood orange. Bitters. 1/2
December 18, 2024 at 9:42 PM
Day 17 is the Glenfiddich 30yo from the Time Reimagined series, this one "Suspended Time".

Nose: oaky, fresh pear, toasted nuts, hint of honey.

Palate: quite light and bright, honeycomb, woody and tart fig.

Finish: short burst of sweet spice, dissipates rather quickly but so enjoyable!
December 17, 2024 at 10:51 PM
Day 16 is the Bushmills 21yo.

Nose: faint nose, but sweet and spicy.

Palate: exceedingly smooth, very Irish. Christmas cake.

Finish: honey and poached pear, ginger candy.

Can't help but wonder what this would have been like cask strength. Really nice, would buy a bottle easily!
December 16, 2024 at 8:55 PM
Day 15 is a 25yo from Wemyss Malts, called "A quarter passed" at 53.6%.

Nose: bright, lemon zest. Worth nosing with an open mouth. Ginger.

Palate: starts juicy, lots of sweetness, but then dries up and strong tannins come through. This thing has layers.

Day 14 is Glenfiddich again, now the Grand Yozakura 29yo. They say it means viewing cherry blossoms at night, which is sweet like this whisky.

Nose: woody, essence of fruit, very light but it's nice. Gets better after the first sip.

Palate: Velvety smooth but light body, honey-ginger syrup...

Day 13 is a 25yo Glenfarclas, at 43%.

Nose: fruity, apple, bit oaky.

Palate: sweet and honey smooth, very light. Orange zest with vanilla. I wish it was cask strength... Sadly seems a bit too watered down.

Finish: short, nutty, a hint of spice.

Day 12 is a 25yo Balblair!

Nose: old books, cigar box, leather. If I close my eyes I feel like I'm in an old library on a leather chair with this and a cigar.

Palate: citrusy, oily mouthfeel, dark chocolate comes through on second pass.

Finish: short but sweet, like orange cream.

Day 11 is an *ARRAN* 26yo, single cask (17849) from Xtra Old Particular. I GASPED when I opened the little box. My girl Arran insisted on being in the background for this one (we named our dog after our fav isle).
Nose: fresh sea air, hay, apples. Orange cream comes through after the first sip.

Day 10 is an Irish whiskey, Bushmills Causeway Collection Port Cask (one of my fav casks!)

Nose: sweet, ripe banana, poached red fruit (especially cherry, I think?).

Palate: surprisingly smooth, anise style spices, apricot, very dark cocoa (like 90% dark chocolate). 1/3
December 11, 2024 at 3:20 AM
Day 9 is another treat!!! A 25yo Old Pulteney! Very exciting.

Nose: oh the sea!!! Salty, classic Old Pulteney. Deep caramel and stewed apple. I could sit nosing this for hours.

Day 8 is the Xtra Old Particular Douglas Laing North British, 33yo single cask, single grain whisky.

Nose: very grain-y. Strong rye vibe. Brown sugar.
