Energy and transitioning from fossil fuels. Complex issues I try to shine a light on. Ex-UKAEA and Met Office. Occasionally politics

If The Times had written 1m more on Universal Credit with no requirements to work they would be correct – because 1m people have been moved from the old Working Tax Credits and Employment Support Allowance to UC.

1m more "on benefits" is WRONG

In 2023 non-hybrid petrol cars produced 157 g CO₂/km

PHEVS produced 144 g CO₂/km

While petrol cars produced 1.24x more CO₂ than their test results would predict, PHEVs produced 4.6x times as much!

Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) produce as almost as much CO₂ as non-hybrid vehicles.

EU analysis of mandatory onboard fuel consumption monitoring of PHEV cars being driven normally shows that their CO₂ emissions are around 140 g/km – not much lower than non-hybrid petrol cars

Realised it needed to be level with the waste outlet (or within 10 cm) so it's moved up a shelf.

Seems to be slightly Dyson-like in that the water is spun around a cylinder, but I don't think it's depending on particles being flung out. Seems to more keeping the water flowing around the filter

That analysis is 🐂, I'm afraid. Network returns are strictly limited under RIIO. Wholesale competition is absolutely cut-throat and margins wafer thin.

It's going to live very happily under the sink and my fellow gym-goers will probably be pleased that I will now be washing my polyester sportswear more frequently!

A few "unboxing" snaps

As I suspected, it's electrically powered, so needs a plug. Cable is 2.3 m long though so shouldn't be a problem!

Mine has arrived 🤩 (Royal Mail 48 delivering in 24 hours!!)

I actually sourced it on eBay for half the retail price. It appears to be a "Backer" unit, which couldn't be delivered due to the backer having moved home

Yeah those charts from @glenpeters.bsky.social are not quite what I'd like to see: a chart of the trajectory which gives a more-likely-than-not chance of stabilising at (say) +1.8° by century's end without NETs. The emissions cut would be steeper than 👇, but not the "vertical line” required for 1.5°

Now, obviously no bridge should have been built and Bowood Lane should be have been left severed. There is no world in which building a bridge for a tiny lane from makes sense. It's a perfect example of HS2 waste.

But the road is still there, just covered in four years of leaf litter and plants

No-one needs telling that the US is in a bad way right now, but just look at this. The state of that government

Cut National Insurance; add it to income tax. All income should be taxed the same.

Fifteen years ago Mirrlees had two big recommendations for personal taxation: a universal credit to replace myriad benefits, and abolish NI. The Tory-LD coalition began one but not the other 🙄

Yesterday Octopus Energy customers were being paid not to use electricity; tomorrow we will be getting as much free electricity as we can use!

Here's UK oil product imports by country of export – note how much comes from India, more than even Saudi. It's about 1.6 million tonnes of jet fuel and 600,000 t of diesel per year.

Octopus offering 24p for every kWh less of electricity you use than average between 6 and 7pm this evening (8 octopoints are worth 1p)

That's quite a good saving

😭

As a reminder Xlinks would have brought as much power to Britain as Hinkley Point C or Sizewell C will generate, at a fraction of the cost and in around half the time.

The government did not give a reason for refusing Xlinks a CfD beyond "not in the national interest" but it's pretty obvious why

grid.iamkate.com sadly being very wrong today, stating that there is twice as much solar power on the grid than there actually is

Maybe the best hope is that as oil and gas infrastructure ages the cost of keeping it working will hold up fossil fuel prices even as demand falls.

One thing's for sure: you'd be an idiot to invest in oil and gas.

Most investors do know this 👇✅

How do you isolate a gas main?

Pinch it! 😬
