Naw, the math works. There’s a point where you’re either gonna make it out of the solar system or you’re gonna fall back down the gravity well. And that point you can use a little bit a fuel to accomplish either goal. But you’ve spent the minimum amount of energy either way.

I’m not an engineer so I haven’t heard of the virial theorem, but my calculation is that the Earth’s orbital velocity is ~30km/s and it’s only ~40km/s to escape the solar system, so it should be energetically cheaper to fling undesirable people out of the solar system vs. sending them to the sun
