Alfred Brendel’s last concert in Vienna in 2008. A look of happiness on his face that, finally, it was all over. And with the small group of pianists lucky enough to have studied with him. He still had so much to give, but I treasure this moment of relief and intimacy. RIP

Seriously, where are all the columnists, commentators, pundits, authors, broadcasters & politicians who kept telling us they cared passionately about ‘
freedom of speech in universities, even as they struggled to cite many examples of it being suppressed?

I asked DeepSeek three questions:

- How does China treat the Uyghur Muslims?

- Is Taiwan part of China?

- What happened in Tiananmen Square in the 1980s?

Visiting the The University of Nottingham and the GSK Carbon Neutral Laboratories for Sustainable Chemistry, where I worked for my PhD.

For me, the CNL's function-informed aesthetic, and the congruity between form and purpose, provides inspiration and an often elusive sense of hopefulness.

Had the enormous privilege of seeing Joe Hisaishi conduct his music at the Royal Albert Hall on Saturday. His suite from Princess Mononoke was deeply moving. @royalalberthall.bsky.social

Thoroughly enjoyed giving a talk today on my career in chemistry research at the Sustainable Hydrogen Centre for Doctoral Training stakeholder event at Loughborough University. So many enthusiastic PhD students! My thanks to the University of Nottingham for the invitation.

Hi Everyone! I'm a scientist researching electrochemical energy/carbon dioxide conversion and storage devices with a love of music - piano, organ, harpsichord, orchestra, choral - who also enjoys ballroom & latin dance. If any of that sounds interesting, give me a follow!
