There have always been plenty of assimilationist queers calling The Bad Gays™ degenerates, but a mix of (extremely conditional) mainstream acceptance and internet spaces where people can be out while still being closeted irl has certainly exacerbated the phenomenon!!

My theory for why it feels like more queers are sexually conservative than in the past is that at least 50% of them would have been closeted and likely vocally homophobic just a few decades ago. The folks at Folsom meanwhile would have always been trying to go somewhere like Folsom.
