I love to read but not sit still. I grow vegetables, support native ecosystems, swim, gaze at birds, and walk with dogs. I teach writing at UCLA to scientists, engineers, and future professional writers. I care about community and doing the right thing.
So let’s create the “live tv show” WE want in LA: A dozen people picking oranges at a public orchard, collecting 3/4 of a ton for school lunches. Volunteers at a science museum engaging with visitors about dire wolves or dinosaurs. Farmer’s market vendors donating unsold vegetables to food banks…

Haven’t made space for many veggies yet this spring (rabbits are a problem, and gophers), but the flowers (and herbs) are flourishing.

Doesn’t it seem like people who read books would know who they DO NOT want to become? For example, you don’t want to be the kid who betrays all his friends to get Turkish delight (or power). Did anyone grow up wanting to become Dolores Umbridge? From the LA Times today:
