I love to read but not sit still. I grow vegetables, support native ecosystems, swim, gaze at birds, and walk with dogs. I teach writing at UCLA to scientists, engineers, and future professional writers. I care about community and doing the right thing.
I hate this

In France, they have the day of patrimony, when all govt buildings are open to anyone who wants to come walk through them. This is meant as a reminder that these buildings all belong to the people. As does the White House.

It seems like companies might rather do business in a nation that has a set tax system (even a high tax rate, b/c of the dependable services that supplies: mail service, energy, safety, etc), not a nation that periodically decides to ask them to give up part ownership of the company to the govt.

Maybe all violent conflicts should become food fights. Other animals know how to fight members of their own species without actually harming each other much.

Maybe we should also actually strike and show the bigwigs that the nation comes to its knees when people without healthcare and food stop contributing. (The Republicans keep pretending that all these people are at home playing video games…show them that’s not true!)

What does all that add up to? Help members of your community get through this difficult time. Insist that the govt give us a fair contract, one that benefits workers, children, and the future success of the nation.

Food and medical care are necessary for health. And health is a necessity for freedom. Timothy Snyder makes a completely convincing argument for why that’s true.

It’s our tax money, and it should go to support the services we need and that make us healthy and happy—and that help make our communities work. As we watch the skimming (spooning?) off of our nation’s wealth to the very rich, and especially to the Trumps, we must insist that money is ours, for us.

This reminds me of a union strike. Which side cares about the hostages (or workers) more is clear, both in the long and short terms. But do we, who the union represents, have the solidarity to back that side up? our own behalf? We must support one another and demand a fair contract with the govt.
