My students are reading Lynda Barry's essay "The Sanctuary of School." Yesterday I passed around One Hundred Demons so they would know more about her genius. I reread some of it on the metro home. Twenty years on, it remains one of my greatest inspirations. 💙📚

I feel like I could've written Polly Barton's memoir of living/working in Japan if I were a lot smarter, better at Japanese, and knowledgeable about philosophy. That is: I couldn't have written it at all, but it resonates eerily with my experience. It is also full of profound reflections. 💙📚 💡📚

I am very much enjoying this weird little memoir. Man who rents himself out to "just be there" for strangers answers some questions. 💙📚
