Though I think most traditions in Ireland and Scotland related to that night (like jack o'lanterns) were started during medieval or early modern times (and hence more related to Christian beliefs of the night), and nothing to do with the ancient Celtic festival.

Yeah, Oiche Shamhna (the first night of Samhain and when modern-day Halloween falls) marks the start of winter here in Ireland. Though date has obviously shifted over time because we use Gregorian calendar, and the ancient Celts had their own calendar.
