He/Him
I just want to obsess over fantasy novels and Kingdom Hearts.
Be nice to me or I’ll cry.

OK but why have I seen no one talk about how Legends Z-A has a beautiful woman who Naruto runs away immediately after meeting you? Emma my love

Gantu’s just shoehorned into the last 10 minutes to give us a fun climax to the film. Up until that point, Jumba is the closest thing to a villain the movie has.

[Day 31] The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien

Probably the most obvious book here, but nonetheless important. Many of the books in this thread would not exist without this one. It’s my personal favorite of Tolkien’s work, and a great intro to fantasy. Beautifully simple, with unmatched world building.

[Day 30] Maus by Art Spiegelman

I think a lot of people know what this book is about, but maybe feel like they’ve got the gist of it and so never actually read it. If you haven’t, I think this is such an important story for everyone to experience. It’s dark, haunting, and so incredibly real.

[Day 29] Tigana by @guygavrielkay.bsky.social

This is one of the most well-written fantasy books I’ve read. It’s pretty slow-paced, but each scene is written so beautifully that it never drags on. I love when an author can make an otherwise mundane scene engaging, and GGK is one of the best at it.

[Day 28] A Psalm for the Wild-Built by Becky Chambers

One of my favorite stories ever. It’s just a super chill read about life, nature, and community. There’s so much heart and optimism in this book, I highly recommend it to anyone who feels like they’re just barely keeping their head above water.

[Day 27] 11/22/63 by @stephenking.bsky.social

Going along with my affinity for time travel plots, this is one of the best there is. My favorite aspects of King’s writing are his character work, dialogue, and near-tangible tension he builds in his scenes. This book has the best examples of all three

[Day 26] This is How You Lose the Time War by @amalelmohtar.com & @maxgladstone.bsky.social

Usually, I’m not big on romance plots. Time travel, though? That gets my attention. This book takes such a unique approach with both that it really won me over. Engaging and thoughtful from start to finish.

[Day 25] Legends & Lattes by @travisbaldree.bsky.social
My favorite sub-genre of fantasy is the cozy, low-stakes, slice-of-life style of fantasy. There are plenty of early examples out there, but Legends & Lattes is probably THE reason we’ve been getting a lot more lately. Its praise is well-earned

[Day 24] The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster

This book is foundational to my sense of humor. If you love puns, dry humor, and wordplay, this book is a really fun time. I recently reread it and must admit that nostalgia does a lot of heavy lifting, but I do still think it’s a great read for kids

[Day 23] The Road by Cormac McCarthy

If I could describe this book in one word, it’d be “gray”. The whole story is bleak, sad, and exhausting, but never without a trace of hope. McCarthy builds atmosphere better than almost any other author imo, and you really feel it here from the very first page.

[Day 22] The Odyssey by Homer

I actually used to hate the Odyssey when I had to read it for school. I always thought it boring, confusing, and long. Once I got older though, and decided to try out other translations, I actually came to really appreciate it and love exploring different versions.

[Day 21] Berserk by Kentaro Miura

Inarguably one of the most influential manga ever. Any time you see a fictional character with a giant sword, you can trace those roots to here. It can be a bit much at first, but stick with it and you discover one of the most intimate and moving stories out there.

[Day 20] Little Busters! by Jun Maeda & Key

I wanted to include at least one VN in this thread, and decided on this one for the emotional impact it had. I played it over a decade ago, and remember staying up until 5am finishing the story and uncontrollably sobbing by the end of it. 10/10 experience

[Day 19] Discworld by Terry Pratchett

There’s no other series like Discworld. Deciding where to start can be tough, but once you do it’s such a great, whimsical adventure that you can easily put down and pick up on a whim. Like a lot of others, I started out with Guards! Guards! and don’t regret it

[Day 18] Realm of the Elderlings by @robinhobb.bsky.social

This is my favorite series. Assassin’s Apprentice is the book that pulled me out of a nearly decade-long reading slump, and I grew more and more absorbed in the world with each following book. This thread couldn’t exist without this series.

[Day 17] Murderbot Diaries by @marthawells.com

It’s often understated how difficult it is to write sarcasm well. Murderbot is a fantastic example of sarcasm and dry humor done right. Each book is also relatively short, which makes for a quick ride, or great palate-cleansers between longer books.

[Day 16] Redwall by Brian Jacques

I don’t think there’s a better introduction to fantasy for young readers out there; besides probably the Hobbit of course. I recently reread book 1, and it still holds up really well. The audiobooks are also great if you’ve got kids in your life who can’t read yet.

[Day 15] Gentleman Bastards by @scottlynch78.bsky.social

This series quickly became one of my favorites after reading it only last year. The character relationships and dialogue are the major standouts for me, and there are just so many little aspects of the world building I adore.
March 15, 2025 at 9:03 PM
[Day 14] Tress of the Emerald Sea by Brandon Sanderson

The Princess Bride, but if Buttercup had set out to sea in search of her lost love, befriended a talking rat, and had a perfectly normal fondness for cups. It’s witty, heartfelt, has great world building, and an undeniable sense of adventure.
March 14, 2025 at 2:28 PM
[Day 13] Monster by Naoki Urasawa

This has been my go-to profile pic for over a decade now, so you can guess how influential this series has been on me. Whether you read the manga or watch the anime, it’s one of the most tense, frightening, & unexpectedly heartfelt psychological thrillers out there

[Day 12] Percy Jackson & The Olympians by @rickriordan.bsky.social
To this day, I don’t think I ever would have engaged as much as I did with the works of Homer if I hadn’t read these as a kid. I read The Lightning Thief right after release when I was 12, and hated waiting a year for each new book.
March 12, 2025 at 8:29 PM
[Day 11] Red Rising Saga by Pierce Brown
My favorite aspect of this series is how it seemlessly progresses from a pretty good dystopian sci-fi series to a grim dark space opera. Imagine a series that starts out as Hunger Games and develops into A Song of Ice and Fire, but in space. Incredible.
March 11, 2025 at 3:54 PM
[Day 10] Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi
An autobiographical graphic novel of the artist’s life; from being a child in Iran during the Iranian Revolution, to so much else that follows. Unapologetically real at times, this is the kind of book certain people want banned for all that we can learn from it
March 10, 2025 at 4:43 PM
[Day 9] The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer
This is actually my fiancée’s favorite series, and she’s the one who introduced me to it. Today’s also her birthday, so I wanted to share it.
A really fun, fantasy cyberpunk reimagining of classic fairy tale characters; Cinderella, Red Riding Hood, etc.
