Sam wanted to make a couple great sauces, so she opted for a ham, cheddar, and apple toasted sandwich with a mayo/dijon sauce and some horseradish dipping sauce for sweet potato fries. A brown ale and a revisit of one of our recent favorite films—The Worst Person in the World—were both nice.

Just trying to understand why a certain person in power wants to return us to the policies of the late nineteenth century by reading a critique of the time by the man who coined the name of the era—The Gilded Age.

A beautiful fall day. One of Sam’s favorite movies (Douglas Sirk’s All That Heaven Allows) with maple old fashions and a hearty apple cider braised pork roast with veggies and mashed potatoes.

Enjoying the leaves today.

Sam made her diner chili for this chilly night. A few small beers and a first time viewing of Midnight Run to go with it.

Between Oscar parties and Halloweens I can now say I have a Mount Rushmore / Letterboxd Top Four of Paul Thomas Anderson film protagonists as costumes.

Sam made her spin on Nashville hot chicken sandwich with coleslaw and onion rings. The bold flavors needed a bold film, so we’re watching Akira Kurosawa’s postwar crime movie Stray Dog and drinking a Japanese lager.

My criterion order—all 80s save Flow. Also Flow and Spinal Tap are the only films I’ve seen before.

So the blindspots are Altered States, Jo Jo Dancer, Your Life is Calling, two films by Claude Berri, Betty Blue, The Signifyin’ Works of Marlon Briggs, Working Girls, and Sid & Nancy.

Our wine and dine and cinema tonight: for this rainy October evening Sam made her spin on zuppa toscana (Italian sausage soup) to go with a Chianti and a revisit of Robert Zemeckis’ underrated Hitchcock-inspired thriller What Lies Beneath, starring Michelle Pfeiffer and Harrison Ford.

The local fog this morning inspired us to make our Wine and Dine based around the 1980 adaptation of Tess of the D’Urbervilles. Sam made a leek and ale shepherd’s pie to go with some hard cider. Happy fall!

#LetterboxdFriday #LastFourWatched

Three John Carpenters for fun, and I taught 2001. Good week.

My next read is the new Pynchon. Going to try to read a couple Pynchon books this fall.
October 7, 2025 at 11:13 PM
Picture this—Sam made delicious butternut squash soup and brats to go with some KC Bier Co Festbier. We have been trying to get with the Halloween spirit so we’ve been watching the John Carpenter movies that are on the Criterion Channel.

#MowingShuffleMix is very indie rock heavy. Band of Horses, Panda Bear, Modest Mouse, Joanna Newsom, and Big Thief. Also featuring New Order, The Turtles, and The Beatles.

This afternoon/night’s double feature is one of nostalgia and baseball and the relentless passage of time—I’m going to watch the Paul Rudd narrated promo doc on the 2015 Royals World Series win and Eephus.

Here’s to the 2025 regular season.

We’re pausing our TCM Wine Club for a while, but we’re going out with a bang with one of our faves—goat cheese naan pizza. (One has mushrooms and pepperoni and the other has sauteed onions and anchovies). A beautiful Pinot Noir and a viewing of the early noir This Gun for Hire take us into the fall.

I do not select what we watch anymore. My toddler runs the remote now.
September 21, 2025 at 10:00 PM
Tonight: a strip steak with a Bordelaise sauce, loaded mashed potatoes, and roasted broccoli with lemon. A Malbec and a revisit of Rebecca are in order with such a meal.

If we can fight of sleep after a long week, we might double feature Rebecca with another gothicesque romance in Phantom Thread.
September 19, 2025 at 10:56 PM
For our anniversary, Sam has made a crazy good shrimp risotto and a raspberry vinaigrette salad with goat cheese. Our wine is a crisp Pinot Grigio and our film the Busby Barkley musical starring Jimmy Cagney, Footlight Parade.
September 13, 2025 at 12:20 AM
Carnitas quesadillas with pickled onions and homemade salsa. A California Carignan. Watching Almost Famous. Trying to get those relaxation vibes in before a full week.

For this Labor Day weekend, Sam made chicken katsu over rice and Asian quick pickles to go with kimchi (from the store) and an Elvis on Tour Sauvingnon Blanc, all paired with the same-titled concert documentary.
August 30, 2025 at 10:49 PM
My biggest blindspots (39 movies) from Indiewire’s best movies of the 70s list. OF COURSE there are still a bunch of 1975 films I need to see after watching over 80 movies from ‘75 earlier this year.
August 24, 2025 at 1:26 PM
Sam and I grilled cilantro lime chicken and elote, and made my patented guacamole with mango. Our wine was an effervescent Portuguese white and our film the western Two Mules for Sister Sara, starring Clint Eastwood and Shirley MacLaine.

#MowingShuffleMix featuring Life Aquatic Bowie cover, Placebo, Joe Hisaishi conducting Princess Mononoke, Sam Cooke live, underrated Vampire Weekend, a sweet combo of Can into DJ Shadow, Stevie Wonder, Rihanna, Devo (also Life Aquatic), King Gizzard, and ending with some Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.
