Hear hear, you put it into words so well! Stories of acceptance and love are important and have their place, but often that's not what I'm looking for—I want to see depictions of people who are even more extreme and explorations of their stories.

2/3 — Whenever I like seeing a character happy without suffering, it’s because their happiness itself is transgressive—they reject convention and take joy in deviance to the extent that if they exist in an IP, consumers usually hate them (or like them in a mean-spirited way—Vox, The Joker, David 8).

3/3 — I like when characters are allowed to be imperfect victims, atypical, or “wired wrong”—not punished for their natures—allowed to be happy without conforming to society’s standard of a morally upright, “normal” person. (But of course I’ll be happy if they suffer a bit anyway, since I ♥️ angst 😌)
