What a superb first edition of the Central European History Convention in Vienna! A privilege to be part of it and especially to thank the great Pieter Judson for his intellectual AND human influence for the past few years. Add old AND new friends, fantastic papers, Vienna.

Two days ago I had the pleasure of running a session with students from the Ukrainian Catholic University, part of the Third Annual Ukrainian Summer School at Warwick. I am so proud that this event exists and I can only hope that similar opportunities will exist going forward.

A LOT to say about Romanian presidential elections, past, future etc. from an objective perspective. But I will go personal this time:I have never felt more emotional about an election in my entire life. I felt hurt, I felt fearful, I felt devastated, I felt hopeless.Tonight, I feel A BIT more hope.

This was really lovely, my own fluctuating degrees of eloquence notwithstanding. My main ( attempted) message, as a historian clumsily thinking of the present and the future: peripheralization of Eastern Europe ( in rhetoric & policy) needs to be abandoned in broader “European” thinking.
