D. Rowan Hale, MD, FACS (pen name), is a surgeon turned storyteller whose fiction blends medical realism with the psychological depth of human resilience. Surgeon. Parent. New author. Lover of New Orleans.
Sometimes when operating in a big and complex open case, everything below the bottom of the surgery gown gets reeeaaal bloody, and it’s uncomfortable. Did an 11 hour case today (no hyperbole). When I came home, I threw away my shoes, threw away my socks. If I coulda thrown away my feet, I woulda.

Writing SNUFF between surgeries means I've plotted murders in hospital cafeterias, outlined interrogation scenes in the doctors' lounge, and revised chase sequences at 2am post-call.
My protagonist is a surgeon-turned-assassin. I'm just a surgeon who needs more sleep. #ThrillerWriter #DebutNovel

I chose New Orleans as the setting for my writing because I love everything about it. A city with its own music, food, dance, language, booze, religions and ways to live & die. You see a glimpse of NOLA, it could not possibly be any other place. The word "unique" is a poor champion for what NOLA is.

I want to create stories where the blood, fear and revenge really make sense to me. Where the sheer horror and tragedy of violence are laid plain. Where the justice isn't quick, and rage has consequences.

The anatomic truth of real violence is more shocking and horrifying than most can imagine.

I started writing because I love thriller fiction, especially revenge thrillers. I have some problems with the majority of gritty, dark thrillers I've seen, both novels and movies: 1. they trade realism for shock and gore, and 2. too many don't have any real sense of consequence for the characters.

I’m Rowan, a surgeon turned storyteller. (Yes, I still operate, too).

I write thrillers about mercy, revenge, and the anatomy of consequence — where every decision cuts both ways.

My debut novel, SNUFF, unfolds in the heart of New Orleans.
