The books this happened with for my students were The Breadwinner by Deborah Ellis (about a girl disguising herself as a boy living under Taliban rule), Agouhanna by Claude Aubry (an Indigenous boy coming of age story), and Hatchet by Gary Paulsen (a boy having to survive in the wilderness alone).

If you truly want to protect women, ask your male counterparts why women can’t even take a jog in daylight hours without the threat of violence?
