This book is getting lots of love and should get lots more! It is truly so good and so needed at this point in time. Thank you @liznorell.bsky.social for providing us with a way to think about where we are right now and how to move forward.

It's amazing* how so many people who should know better have just cast aside any pretense of critical thinking and jumped headfirst onto the hype wagon.

*it's not, I guess, but still
I am increasingly distressed by academia's uncritical adoption of what are marketed as AI tools, as it is increasingly clear how many of the adopters (both individuals and uni reps purchasing services) have no idea what they're actually buying.

Online Degrees Out of Reach

Fewer than half of students at the largest nonprofit online institutions earn a degree after eight years. Is it an unfortunate reality or a cry for accountability? #HigherEd #EDUSky #AcademicSky bit.ly/4260aMV

I just wrote a long thread about being treated as unreliable in the professional sphere; this describes the horrific way victims are discredited and dismissed in campus rape. Very different subjects/seriousness, but it's the same problem of not being treated as credible/ competent when you speak up.
I talked to @nbedera.bsky.social about her devastating research into Title IX offices & new book On the Wrong Side: “There’s this myth men’s lives are ruined when they’re accused of sexual violence—it isn’t just untrue, it becomes justification for giving them benefits to compensate for that."

Part of fighting back is being both intentional, accurate, and forceful with our language.

So anti-woke, anti-DEI efforts and activists? Especially when those efforts result in demonstrably lower numbers of qualified Black people the ranks?

Start calling these folks pro-segregation.

i am pretty confident that it will soon become the law that any effort to remedy racial inequality, private or public, will be illegal anti-white discrimination. fairness is, of course, when our institutions are lily white and male
“DNH is seeking a declaratory judgment that the scholarship violates the Equal Protection Clause and Title VI, as well as a permanent injunction "barring Defendants from seeing or considering applicants’ race when selecting the recipients" for the scholarship.”

I was in a workshop last week where, with a straight face, the speaker put up a slide listing all the recent “innovations” that were supposed to revolutionize edu and said, “AI will be different! This time, it will work!”

My eyes almost rolled out of my head.

"The list names an Army officer who traveled to 14 historically Black colleges to expand recruitment"

Since these people are literally using "woke" to mean "entertained the thought of hiring a Black person," opposition to DEI, affirmative action, etc. should be understood as support for segregation

What does it mean to write a book as a contingent scholar? It means to do something that's already hard enough on its own, but also to do it without the (admittedly eroding) supports of full-time tenure-track employment--time, funding, library access, and a steady job.

I realized a long time ago that people who ridicule liberal arts don't actually think that those majors inevitably lead to poor economic outcomes. They think they SHOULD lead to poor economic outcomes. It's a value judgment, rejecting the any sentimentality that might hold back ruthless advancement.

There are a lot of problems that beset academia. This 👇 is one of the worst. How can we defend ourselves from the Rufos and DeSantises of the world when many of us can't even respect our colleagues enough to help equitably distribute labor?
A study on what many of us already know: over 75% of internal service work in academia is done by women. The bit that gets me:”The male associate professors in particular made it clear that they actively engaged in evasiveness and did not want to participate if it was not positive for their careers”
Women end up doing the academic housework
