However, if you have a candidate you’d like to vote for that’s a dem for the national primary, you take the democrat ballot and forfeit your say in what candidate gets the local office.

For example, in 2016 election for primary in my state, the only people even still running out of the Dems

No, we were actually discussing why sometimes the only option in red states is to vote Republican. If you’re still confused, let me try to explain to you how it works here when you are left leaning in a highly red area where your local elections don’t have democrats.
